Dr. Barnes received his PhD in 2017 from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in the Lab of Dr. Kristin Eckert. He then did his postdoctoral training with Dr. Patty Opresko at the University of Pittsburgh. Ryan opened his lab at KUMC in Sept on 2023.
Dr. Moreno received her PhD in 2017 from University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) in the Lab of Dr. Carlos Menck. She did her postdoctoral training with Dr. Nadja Pinto-Souza at the University of Sao Paulo until 2020 and then at National Institutes of Health with Dr. Roger Woodgate until 2024.”
Postdoc
Originally from India, Aninda completed his bachelor’s and master’s degree from the Presidency University, Kolkata. Aninda received his MS-Ph.D. in 2023 from the University of Missouri-Kansas City working on DNA demethylation. After completion of the Ph.D., he joined the lab as a postdoctoral scholar. Currently he is working on oxidative DNA damage.
Postdoc
Dr. Garbouchian received his PhD in biochemistry and biophysics in 2022 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the labs of Dr. Susan Gilbert and Dr. Marvin Bentley where he studied neuronal vesicle transport using live- and fixed-cell imaging. He is primarily interested in understanding the cellular mechanisms that ensure consistent, error-free division, especially when cells face genomic insults or are in disease states such as cancer, as well as optimizing live-cell imaging strategies. Alex joined Ryan Barnes’ lab as a postdoctoral fellow in May of 2024.
Graduate Student
Saikt Rahman completed his B.S. and M.S. from the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He joined the IGPBS program at KUMC in Fall 2024 and later joined the Barnes Lab as a graduate student in 2025. His research interests focus on the DNA damage tolerance pathway and the role of polymerases in DNA lesion bypass. When he's not thinking about DNA, Saikt enjoys writing and has authored a storybook in his native language. He also loves spending time with his family and cheering on Real Madrid victories.
